GM says, "*** START SESSION ***"
GM [to Renard]: they can walk in anytime, but we're already 10 minutes late
GM says, "ok, where we left off last week, you were all in Predrag's inn in the village of Benecortum"
GM says, "Predrag had just walked in carrying the limp form of his son Galen"
Renard says, " - did Lord Faiseric do this deed?"
Bodoni stops cavorting with Garomach the site, a sobering shock
Bodoni rises from his chair
GM says, "[Predrag, sobbing] i have no idea... i found him outside of town, his throat slashed open"
Joseph where outside of town?
GM [to Bodoni]: make a HT roll, please
Bodoni says, "(hey GM? any special penalties while drunk, or just window dressin'?)"
Bodoni rolls 3 + 0.
Result [3 4 3] = 10 + 0 = 10.
GM says, "[Predrag] i can show you if you like"
Renard [to party]: "Sounds too grisly for Lord Faiseric"
GM [to Bodoni]: ok, you made it, so i'll reduce any penalties for being drunk to -1 on basically everything
Bodoni says, "(cool beans :))"
Renard [to GM]: do we know of any sadism in Lord Faisericby reputation?
GM [to Bodoni]: the adrenaline from the shock of seeing Galen dead helps to sober you up a bit
Renard [to GM]: Garomach's state of mind?
GM [to Renard]: not sadism, no. he's a tough customer, though.
Joseph says, "(to GM) is it still nighttime?"
GM says, "Garomach's eyes are glazed over and he looks like he might have passed out with his eyes open"
Bodoni says, "This was not something a Lord would do, Renard. Nay, this is the work of a coward."
GM [to Joseph]: oh yes, it's not even midnght yet
Renard [to Predrag]: "Did Lord Faiseric find out about Galen? Bandits are about, so his daughter must have been kidnapped while on a tryst with Galen. You know this should never have been allowed!"
Bodoni a bit forcefully 'Renard, please..show some tact.'
GM says, "[predrag] i don't know what could have happened! and i know that this relationship was a mistake from the beginning, but we thought there just might be a chance... it was a foolish dream, i know..."
Renard [to GM]: Treverus state of health? [after being dragged full speed on a horse...]
Corin has arrived.
GM says, "the door opens again and in walks Godefridel"
Corin apologizes profusely.
GM says, "[Godefridel] i heard the commotion back in Praesus but just managed to catch up... what's goig on?"
GM [to Corin]: that's ok... just try to catch up, we just started 10 minutes ago
Bodoni says, "A murder, Godefridel. Foul, evil business."
Renard motions to Galen's dead body in his father's arms
Renard says, "Faiseric's daughter is kidnapped!""
GM says, "[Godefridel] Liufs Guth! Who is the boy?"
Bodoni says, "Predrag, the Tavern keeper's son."
Renard [to Corin]: Would you run and see if Faiseric is mounting a party to hunt for the bandits? Tell him we have one of their leaders here {though he may not be alive still...}
GM [to Bodoni]: ooc: Predrag's the father, Galen's the son
Bodoni says, "(strike that.. Galen..)"
Bodoni says, "(that came out wrong.. ;D)"
GM says, "[Godefridel] is this the work of the evil bandits?"
GM [to Renard]: treverus is alive but unconscious
Corin nods to Renard. "ok, I will." Corin runs out to his horse and rides to find Faiseric.
Bodoni says, "I suspect it may be. we were not able to subdue them all. Perhaps they fell upon the boy."
GM says, "[Predrag] Faiseric is going nuts trying to find his daughter, i think he's trying to rally a search party for her"
GM says, "ooc: 'going nuts' - probably not a Latin idiom :)"
Bodoni says, "(lol)"
Corin [to GM] Is Faiseric interested in the fact we have the leader?
GM says, "corin discovers that Faiseric has a posse of 10 men fanning out looking for Faisilde"
Renard [to GM]: meaning that Faiseric is not around?
GM [to Corin]: when you approach his villa, you are stopped by a burly guard
GM says, "[Burly Guard] who approaches?"
Corin says, "I am Corin, from Praesus! I must speak with Faiseric.""
GM says, "(i'm assuming that the posse is obvious, but faiseric is in his villa... this is easily determined from other villagers but if you want to talk to faiseric himself you'll have to get inside)"
GM says, "[B.G.] i've seen you before, but what business have you with the Baron?"
Corin says, "I have information that may help in finding his daughter.""
GM says, "[B.G.] WHAT? Wait here."
GM says, "without waiting for an answer, he runs back towards the house, leaving you at the (closed) iron gate"
Corin nods, and then looks around nervously.
Corin wonders if this is a mistake and that he will be blamed for the missing daughter.
Renard [to Predrag]: We've sent for Lord Faiseric, as we have one of the bandit leaders for questioning... but you might want to take your wife and retreat to your rooms, to avoid confrontation...
GM says, "less than a minute later, old B.G. returns with another guard and Baron Faiseric"
Bodoni says, "I'm not sure our friend here, will know much of this tragedy. ::points to Treverus::"
Corin climbs down from his horse and kneels before the Baron.
Renard [to Bodoni]: He muttered something of a conspiracy when we were questioning him earlier tonight.
GM says, "(i was ignoring the bit about the horse, actually... you're just walking around the village)"
Corin says, "Baron Faiseric, can these men be trusted with what I have to say?" Corin nods to the other guards."
GM [to Renard]: hold on to that thread while i work on corin's story... i can't multi-thread well
Renard [to GM]: it's in the queue! ;)
Bodoni surprised "really..hm...perhaps there is more to this than any of us suspect"
GM says, "[Faiseric] boy, i trust these men much farther than i trust YOU"
GM says, "he gestures to the men, who open the gate"
Corin turns a deep red, stands and enters.
Corin says, "Baron, we have captured the leader of a group of bandits who may have information about your daughter.""
GM has disconnected.
Corin oops
Corin says, "everyone else here?"
Bodoni deep lines set into face, absently rubs the corner of the patch over his right eye "This is turning out to be more than just a string of cattle thefts it would seem."
Bodoni says, "(yup, I'm here)"
GM has connected.
Corin (wb)
GM says, "everyone still here?"
Joseph says, "yep"
Corin (yep)
GM says, "i got disconnected briefly"
GM says, "what was the last thing you heard me say?"
Joseph says, "'GM says, "he gestures to the men, who open the gate"'"
Bodoni says, "(he gestures to the men, who open the gate)"
Corin turns a deep red, stands and enters.
GM says, "the two guards seize your arms as you step inside. do you try to resist them?"
Corin (nope)
Corin says, "Baron, we have captured the leader of a group of bandits who may have information about your daughter.""
GM says, "[Faiseric] you think the bandits have something to do with Faisilde?"
Corin nods vigorously. "We saw her in some fields just north of where we fought the bandits."
Renard ['doh!]
GM says, "[Faiseric] you SAW her? when was this?"
GM [to Renard]: hehehe
Corin gulps and looks around very nervously.
Bodoni (well on th eupswing, at least he can't kill Galen, Renard. ;D)
GM says, "[Faiseric] i warn you, boy, these men will help me get your story one way or another"
Corin (hope that is true Bodoni)
Renard [to Bodoni]: The follow up is: "how come I didn't hear about this earlier?"
Bodoni (lol. ;D)
Corin says, "I believe it was last night. She was with Galen, the son of Predrag.""
Bodoni (Corin ::digging a deeper and deeper hole:: ;D)
Corin (damn, we're going to get blamed for not escorting her home!)
Corin (or should I say I)
Renard [to GM]: Corin does a default Detect Lies when Faiseric denies that he knew... ;)
GM says, "[Faisreic, furiously screaming] my daughter! (incoherent) Galen! (cursing, cursing)"
GM says, "the others can hear faint yells back at the inn :)"
Corin hopes they come to his aid, and curses Renard for his idea of coming here.
GM says, "[Faiseric] this was while you were searching for the bandits, niu?"
Bodoni looks about "Sounds as if Corin has told Faiseric about his daughter and the lad."
GM says, "[Faiseric] and you chose to protect Galen, do i have this correct?"
Bodoni (careful how ya answer, Corin. ;D)
Corin nods. "No, Baron Faisilde! We were with Lord Garomach and others. Lord Garomach told Galen to talk your daughter straight home!"
GM [to Corin]: as far as you can tell, Faiseric is telling the truth that he is just now finding out about ths deal with galen
Corin talk = take
Bodoni (when is doubt, blame it on ye own Lord. ;D)
Bodoni (is=in)
Corin says, "I was following the orders of Lord Garomach, and knew nothing would happen to your daughter or Galen.""
GM says, "[Faiseric] ah yes, Lord Garomach... i will have something to discuss with him. come, boy."
Corin nods sullenly.
GM says, "not that you have much choice, as the guards lead you along as Faiseric strides to the inn"
Renard [to GM]: you wanna call Caralchis on the phone?
Corin is glad to see some familiar faces again.
Renard [to GM]: did Predrag leave the room as I had recommended?
GM says, "(back at the inn) Predrag's wife retired to a back room, taking Garomach with her. Predrag is still puttering about, however."
Bodoni (?where's the boy's body?)
Renard [to Predrag]: [angrily] Get the hell outta here - we've sent for Faiseric and we don't need a confrontation!
GM [to Renard]: no, i've called Caralchis our last two sessions... he'll have to find his own way this time
GM [to Bodoni]: predrag has laid the body on a bed in a room in the inn
GM says, "[Predrag, cowed] ok, ok, sorry Renard"
GM says, "he goes to find his wife"
GM says, "Faiseric bursts inside, and roars, "Where is that son of a fitchet bitch Galen?!""
Corin winces.
Corin looks sheepishly at the others.
Bodoni evenly to Faiseric "murdered."
GM says, "[Faiseric, incredulous] What?"
Renard says, "Lord Faiseric! This man is on the brink of dying -- he is Treverus, a leader of the bandits, and we were able to get him to admit vaguely to a conspiracy that may involve the kidnapping of your daughter.""
Bodoni says, "Aye, mi'lord.. his throat cut."
Joseph says, "M'lord, whe believe this isn't the work of just bandits"
GM says, "Faiseric pauses for a moment, stunned by the onslaught of information"
Renard [to Joseph]: We do?
Joseph says, "well, *I* don't"
GM says, "[Faiseric] well, son, maybe you can tell me what in the nine hells is going on?"
Bodoni (Joseph you've been quiet, haven't ya? :D)
Corin hopes the guards have loosend their grip on him at this information.
GM says, "the guards are holding tight so far"
Joseph says, "As they say, this man Treverus was the bandit leader. I think we should take him to Father Theudar at St. Vincents. He might be able to restore this man to health. He might also know something about the markings on that armband."
GM says, "they are watching their master closely"
Joseph looks around sheepishly, of course, I could be wrong. (shrugs)
GM says, "[Faiseric] i know Theudar. strange old man, but a competent healer. what has this to do with conspiracy or the work of other than just bandits?"
Bodoni re: Joseph's suggestion "The boy offers some sound advice, Mi'lord."
Bodoni (before Faiseric's line)
Renard [to Faiseric]: He muttered something about a Lady [] and a conspiracy, before he collapsed due to his wounds.
GM says, "[Faiseric] in any event, i must first locate my daughter. i don't care if this bandit bastard Treverus dies, as long as i get her back quickly."
Joseph says, "When we found the bandit camp and reclaimed the cattle, some of the bandits escaped into the woods. We didn't persue them. They may be behind this."
Corin says, "The other bandits rode south from where we found them, perhaps she is that way.""
GM says, "[Faiseric] there are... factors at play just now that make her rather valuable to me"
Bodoni says, "We were engaged with the rest of the criminals."
Joseph says, "um.. if you don't mind us asking M'lord. What 'factors'?"
Corin is also curious.
Renard [to Faiseric]: anything that you could reveal to us might enable us to help, as we're certainly dedicated to the matter.
Bodoni shoots Joseph a look
Corin learned to keep a little more quiet though.
GM says, "[Faiseric, shaking his head] never mind... but these other bandits that got away... perhaps they kidnapped Faisilde to ransom her for this man Treverus, niu?"
GM says, "[Faiseric, noticing Corin again] unhand the lad"
Corin stops, having never thought of that.
GM says, "the guards release Corin"
Joseph says, "in which case I suppose we had better keep this man alive. right?"
Corin shakes himself away proudly from the guards.
GM says, "[Faiseric] but you say Galen was murdered, also? where did this take place?"
Renard [to Faiseric]: how many hours since she was last seen? If we could wake this man, we might be able to find where they may have taken your daughter.
Bodoni offers "perhaps Joseph and myself should take this trash to Theudar to see if anything can be gained from that band he spoke of. The rest can help search for Lord Faiseric's daughter?"
Corin says, "Treverus would not have known of a kidnapping if it was in response to his capture."
GM says, "[Faiseric] after dark, Faisilde retired to sleep. no one, except obviously that cur Galen, has seen her since."
Renard [to Corin]: again, he mentioned something of a "plan" involving this Lady Miraguntha"
Renard [to Corin]: again, he mentioned something of a "plan" involving this Lady Miraguntha
GM says, "[Faiseric, menacingly] you must not speak of Galen and Faisilde to any other, do you all understand?"
Joseph says, "understood, M'lord"
Corin says, "Who is Lady Miraguntha, mi'lord?"
Renard says, "Yes, Lord!"
Joseph shoots Corin a look
Bodoni nods respectfully at Faiseric's proclamation "Aye, mi'lord."
GM says, "[Faiseric] i know no one by that name"
Corin nods.
Corin grins at Joseph.
Renard [to Godefriedel]: and you're sure that you've not heard of this Lady?
GM says, "[Godefridel, who was been watching intently] me? what was the name again?"
Renard says, "Miraguntha"
Corin says, "If we knew who Lady Miraguntha was, we may be able to find your daughter, mi'lord."
GM says, "[Godefridel] i have heard the name before, but it is not an uncommon name in some parts of the Empire that i have traveled. i have not heard it around these parts, no."
Bodoni offers again "perhaps some of us should take this trash to Theudar to see if anything can be gained from that band he spoke of? The rest can help search for Lord Faiseric's daughter?"
Bodoni says, "That object we found may be a clue to this?"
GM says, "[Faiseric] we must visit the place where Galen was murdered... Faisilde must have been there as well... we will not waste time with Treverus... leave him here to rot"
Renard says, "...if Lord Faiseric doesn't want to question Treverus, take him to St. Vincents"
Renard [to Faiseric]: we're with you, Lord!
GM says, "[Faiseric] we have wasted too much time already to worry about effete armbands!"
Bodoni privately thinks not investigaing this is a bad idea, but does not speak up "As ye wish mi'lord."
Corin (Treverus still tied across a horse?)
GM says, "[Faiseric] who discovered the cur's body?"
Bodoni says, "His father. Predrag.""
GM [to Corin]: you brought him inside. he's lying on a bench.
Renard [to GM]: if we didn't get sufficient direction to the location of Galen's body, I'll fetch him
GM [to Renard]: you didn't get any direction really, so you fetch Predrag
Renard says, "We'"
Renard says, "We'll have Predrag take us to the spot where Galen was found. Lord, do you have a tracker that you should send for? If not, I will serve."
GM says, "[Faiseric] Predrag, you've done me a great disservice, and i will have to deal with you later. in the meantime, i may be more merciful if you help find my missing daughter. Show us where you found you boy's body."
Bodoni says, "(sorry, Joseph, can't seem to 'w')"
GM says, "[Predrag] yes, milord."
GM says, "he leads the group of you (Faiseric, all the PCs, Godefridel) a couple of hundred yards outside of the village"
GM says, "into the fields... it isn't that far off the path from Praesus, actually, and Johan remarks that he earlier noticed some dogs making noise around here but didn't think anything of it at the time"
Renard witholds a slap of Johan, and instead pats him on the back.
GM says, "[Predrag, voice breaking] aye, the dogs discovered Galen before i did."
Corin says, "w no problem to Bodoni"
Corin (oops sorry)
GM wonders what sort of PC conspiracy is afoot
Bodoni (smiles ;D)
Corin gets ready to assassinate Faiseric. Just kidding
GM says, "you reach the spot that Predrag takes you to. there is blood on the ground here."
Corin peers hard into the distance all around, trying to see any strange things.
Bodoni keeps his one eye out for any trouble
Joseph says, "any kind of tracks? hoof prints, foot prints?"
Joseph says, "odd bits of clothing?"
Corin (we walked out here? Or rode?)
Renard motions to footprints, leading to the southeast
Renard foot=hoof
GM says, "everyone is looking around, and renard finds hoofprints"
Corin (who is watching Treverus?)
GM says, "it looks like just one horse"
Bodoni (no one, right? Faiseric said to let his rot..)
GM says, "treverus is at the inn, tied up and being watched by predrag's wife, presumably"
Bodoni (his=him)
Corin says, "strange, only one horse.""
GM says, "[Faiseric] well done, renard. Galen's murderer was on horseback. perhaps i should reward him when we locate him, niu?"
Corin says, "An organized kidnapping would surely involve more than one."
Bodoni (maybe Galen was kidnapped by aliens and they left a dead clone is his place.. and oops! Sorry! wrong genre.. ;D)
Renard says, "We may find that this horse joins up with more tracks"
GM [to Bodoni]: hey, with me you never know :)
Corin says, "Look! A shoe in the distance!" Corin points down the tracks."
GM says, "[Faiseric] fetch it, boy."
Corin runs and gets the shoe, giving it to Faiseric.
GM says, "[Faiseric, nodding] this is Faisilde's slipper"
Bodoni (Corin unwittingly invents self-service, when he tells Faiseric to 'fetch it hiself!' ;D)
Corin (yeah right. I like my neck.)
Bodoni (lol)
GM [to Bodoni]: you're all doing a great job of being ordered about by others... it's not in the Western tradition to enjoy that, is it? :)
Renard keeps tracking
Bodoni (hehe... ;D)
Corin is only a peasant, used to taking orders, no?
GM [to Corin]: yes, yes, you're doing great!
Corin (so we are walking I take it.)
Bodoni (we are?)
GM says, "[Faiseric] what could have happened here? i'd like to think Faisilde murdered that boy out of shame, but probably not."
GM says, "at the moment, you're walking"
GM says, "your horses are still at the inn"
Bodoni finds the image that Faiseric describes an odd one.
GM says, "[Faiseric] therefore i think we must assume that Galen's murderer is indeed also Faisilde's kidnapper"
Bodoni agrees "An excellent assumption, mi'lord."
GM says, "[Faiseric] let us fetch our mounts and ride to her rescue... Predrag, you will wait in your little hovel until i return"
Corin follows Renard as he tracks, keeping a look-out all around, and nods agreeingly to Faiseric. "yes, milord, this must be true."
Renard says, "Johan, go with them and bring my horse. I'll keep tracking to save a few minutes' time."
Bodoni silently enjoys Garomach's company far better than this 'enlightned' ruler.
GM says, "[Johan] right"
GM says, "ooc: Faiseric is much closer to historical realism than Garomach"
Bodoni (I know.. ;D)
Bodoni (probabaly why I like Garomach better.. ;D)
GM says, "you get the horses and ride back to find renard moving through the fields, still tracking"
Corin returns to his horse, and tries to remember when he slept last.
GM says, "renard, you track like a champion"
GM says, "the tracks never join any other horse tracks as they make their way to the forest"
Corin [whispers to Bodoni and the others] "Faiseric is lying. He knows who Miragutha is!"
Renard , inside his heart-of-hearts, hopes secretly to be praised and rewarded for his efforts... but meanwhile takes pride in doing his duty.
GM says, "it takes an hour, moving fairly slowly as you track, to reach the forest's edge"
Bodoni whispers to Joseph "Are you prepared, boy? This may, again, become a heated battle."
Renard [to Corin]: watch your tongue, boy. It's his business!
GM says, "we're going to need a marching order"
Corin [to Renard] and ours now!
GM says, "riding order, whatever"
Bodoni Whisper to Renard "Don't be a fool, we need to find the girl."
Renard [to GM]: Johan will stick by me.
GM says, "natch"
GM says, "corin, point as usual? :)"
Bodoni (I'll be in front of Joseph)
Corin says, "Behind Renard this time :P"
GM says, "caralchis takes the point"
Renard [to Bodoni]: Faiseric will reveal what he decides. There's nothing we can do about any secrets he might have.
GM says, "ok, it goes caralchis first, followed by bodoni and joseph"
GM says, "then ride faiseric and godefridel, followed by renard and johan, with corin bringing up the rear"
Renard [to All]: recall who has their armor and who does not. I believe that Johan and I are without our leather torsos.
Corin says, "Faiseric's guards gone?"
GM says, "that's correct, renard"
Corin says, "I am still armed and armored, I believe."
Bodoni (Gm, I said I took mines off, to be bandanged, but I think I forgot to put it on)
GM [to Corin]: oh, good point :) the guards didn't come out to look for the site, they were mainly to guard YOU, corin
Corin [they'd need more than two *grin*]
GM [to Bodoni]: you all had taken armor off in Praesus, but put it back on before riding for Benecortum except for Johan and Renard, who were busy with Treverus
Bodoni (I most likely would have put it back on, if we were going out like this)
Bodoni (GM, what's my current HT? have I regained any hits. I know what it is, but did I gain any yet, or is it too soon?)
GM says, "you reach the forest edge, and the tracks lead to a well-hidden trail that you must have missed your first night out"
Renard [to GM]: does the trail seem to lead in the same direction as the clearing?
GM [to Bodoni]: you have 7 hits left. you have not regained any hits yet. healing injury requires quiet and takes at least one day per hit.
Bodoni (okay, thought so, jus' checking. Thanks. :))
GM [to Renard]: yes, it's heading for the bandit camp
Corin checks his bow, and jostles his quiver, loosening the arrows within.
Bodoni states the obvious, quietly "We seem to be heading back to the Bandit camp."
GM says, "[Faiseric] this is unpleasant. tonight is the new moon, an evil portent. it is a night for skulking forest skohls. be on the lookout, everyone"
Bodoni takes that seriously "Aye, mi'lord."
Renard says, "Lord Faiseric - we're headed in the same direction as we found the bandits earlier today."
Renard suddenly stiffens and nervously looks around the woods, at Faiseric's words.
Corin says, "Perhaps one of us should ride quietly ahead as a scout?"
GM says, "you enter the dense forest and begin riding gently uphill."
Bodoni volunteers to ride ahead
GM says, "[Faiseric] if you wish, lad, you may do so, but i do not recommend it."
Corin nods and decides not to pursue it.
Bodoni nods at Faiseric's words "As ye wish, mi'lord."
Corin is not sure if he like the rear or the point better.
GM says, "[Faiseric to Bodoni] you look to be a seasoned soldier. act as our speculatore if you wish, but stay within shouting distance at all times."
Bodoni nods "Aye, mi'lord."
Corin looks behind them nervously.
Bodoni rides ahead and takes point
Bodoni keeping my one eye out for any trouble
GM says, "caralchis does a competent job tracking, although this is very easy through the trail, as the hoofprints you seek stay on it the whole way"
GM says, "there are some rocks about, but never a stretch long enough to lose the track"
Renard says, "Shall we charge into the fray this time, for hope of surprise to avoid them taking advantage of their having Faiseric's daughter? Or shall we negotiate?"
GM says, "presently you approach the clearing where you fought the bandits earlier today"
GM [to Bodoni]: you see and hear nothing unusual
Corin looks to see if the bodies are still there.
GM [to Corin]: let's get you into the clearing first :)
Renard [to Faiseric]: ?
Corin [ah ok]
Corin notches an arrow when he sees the open clearing ahead.
GM [to Renard]: wait one
Bodoni rides slowly back a peice to speak with others "mi'lord, the clearing appears deserted."
GM says, "[Faiseric, whispering] Bodoni should be reporting any moment now"
Renard [to GM]: ...bleeding second? ;)
Joseph readies his bow too
GM says, "[Faiseric] hmmmm.... very well, let us proceed with caution"
Bodoni says, "Aye.." :once again takes point"
Bodoni once again takes point
GM says, "entering the clearing, you find that the tents have been taken down and the fires extinguished. the body of the bandit left for dead is gone."
GM says, "the tracks, however, lead directly from the northwest edge of the clearing (where you entered it) to its northeast edge"
Bodoni keeps following the tracks ahead of others, but within communication distance
GM says, "following them, you come upon another well-hidden trail"
GM says, "you realize that the trail you took tonight was the one you had found during the day leading northwest out of the clearing, but this trail leading northeast you didn't see earlier. of course, you weren't looking especially for trails."
Bodoni mutters something about bewitchments to himself
Corin says, "I wonder if there are other hidden trails from this clearing."
GM says, "very shortly along this trail you hear the sound of rushing water, and before long you stand before the Maradoc River"
Bodoni keeping a very sharp eye out, all his senses on alert
Corin [is it fjord-able?]
Corin [thinks thats the word]
GM says, "you knew that it ran north through the forest, but it isn't navigable this far south and this area is not well known"
Bodoni (you're not cleared for that... Fnord! ;D)
Renard says, "...and the tracks??"
GM says, "it looks to be fordable... the river widens around here and is going fairly slowly... you can't gauge the depth well but the trail obviously picks up across the river"
GM says, "you can't tell if the tracks pick up across the river, but they certainly lead right to the river's edge on this side"
GM [to Corin]: actually a fjord is not the same as a ford :)
Corin peers across the river. " a good place to be attacked."
Renard says, "let's take a few minutes to scan for tracks leading back out of the Mardoc on this side, a few yards up and down the bank."
GM says, "[Faiseric] indeed. if the bandits have gathered on the other bank, we may be walking into a trap."
Bodoni out ahead "aye, that it is..but that's the way me must go it seems."
Renard says, "...meanwhile, someone with good riding skills should try to pick out a ford..."
Corin says, "we should cross in two's."
Bodoni (is 12- a good riding skill? :D)
GM [to Bodoni]: fairly good
Corin [14 here]
Bodoni (let Corin do it... ;))
GM says, "let's not advertise skill levels"
Bodoni (okie. ;D)
Corin says, "Bodoni, cross the river with me?"
Bodoni nods "Aye"
Corin says, "we will signal if it is safe."
GM says, "or any other character-specific information. an overconfident character with skill 10 should say 'i'm the best rider here!' but if he reveals his skill level, the point of the disad is lost"
Bodoni (Alrightly, then. Will do. :D)
GM says, "renard, while the others are talking about a ford, you check up and downstream and see no other tracks"
Corin begins to ese his horse across the river with Bodoni.
Corin says, "ese = ease"
Bodoni begins to try and cross the river
Renard [to GM]: how far across is the river? -- compared to the striking distance of bows?
GM says, "the horses cross with little difficulty, the water rising to just three feet or so in the middle"
GM says, "the river is about 80 feet wide here"
Corin rides around the other side, scouting a small area.
GM says, "a bow could strike at under 30 yards pretty easily, especialy with aiming"
Renard says, "...well, let's get going."
Bodoni tries to be as quiet as possible, keeping an eye about
Corin waves an "all clear" signal back to the others. [assuming I see nothing.]
GM [to Corin]: you see nothing except the trail leading farther northeast
GM says, "the rest of you cross as well, the horses picking their own footing along the streambed"
Corin resumes his position in the rear.
GM says, "brb"
GM says, "sorry - phone rang and my wife is sick so i'm trying to let her sleep as long as possible... crisis averted :)"
Corin says, "np"
GM says, "bodoni resumes the point, staying about 50 yards ahead of the rest of the group as you head down the trail, which actually leads uphill"
GM says, "and into the forest again"
GM says, "the rushing of the river fades as the trail heads more steeply uphill until it reaches a very steep ridge"
GM says, "the 'trail', as it were, appears as only a break in the trees going up this ridge"
Renard [to GM]: must we walk our horses?
Corin [are we no longer hidden by trees?]
GM says, "there's no way the horses can climb this sucker, it's about a 70-degree incline"
GM says, "there are trees all around, you're just on the trail"
Renard [to GM]: any sign of where the horse we're following went?
GM says, "it's sort of like the trail runs into a wall"
GM [to Renard]: nope
Corin says, "there must be a hidden cave entrance."
Bodoni mutters something about witchery at the sight of it
Renard [to GM]: where does its tracks stop?
Corin says, "rides along the base of the ridge, searching for a hidden entrance."
GM says, "the ground is quite rocky about and the tracks lead to a long stretch of rock"
GM says, "you could probably climb the ridge - it's only about 20 feet high"
Corin rides along the base of the ridge, searching for a hidden entrance.
Renard says, "someone should climb up to see, but I'll look to see where the horse could be led -- perhaps following the base of the ridge?"
Bodoni offers to climb up
Bodoni says, "I'll do it.""
Bodoni begins to climb up the ridge
GM says, "renard and corin start riding south along the ridge"
GM says, "bodoni, what's your climbing?"
GM says, "never mind, i got it"
Bodoni grunts a bit from his wounds, but largely tries to ignore them
GM says, "make a Climbing roll at +1, bodoni"
Corin wonders if he should be climbing instead of Bodoni.
Bodoni rolls 3 + 1.
Result [5 3 2] = 10 + 1 = 11.
GM says, "don't apply the modifier to the roll, only the target"
GM says, "so you rolled a 10, making it by 2"
Bodoni (okay)
GM says, "in three minutes you've breasted the ridge"
Bodoni peers about
Bodoni breathing a little hard
Bodonisquats down to relay the information to the others "Looks like the outline of a ruined building. Round...about 10 yards from here.. too dark to see much else.
Bodoni says, """"
GM says, "renard and corin walk their horses (the trees make riding difficult) around the south and see no easy ways up the ridge within 5 minutes or so"
Corin says, "Lets try the north side."
Corin turns his horse around and walks along the north side of the ridge base.
Bodoni eyes widen suddenly, and reaches for my mace
Renard [to GM]: how long to climb up the ridge?
GM says, "one sec"
Bodoni says, "Witchery!"
Corin says, "what is it,Bodoni?""
Bodoni tries to back a way a bit, quick "A beast...a wolf...larger than any..."
GM [to Corin]: he doesn't have to say much at the moment
Bodoni (can I dodge?)
GM says, "doen't have TIME to say much"
GM says, "yes"
GM says, "better make it :)"
Bodoni rolls 3 + 0.
Result [2 5 4] = 11 + 0 = 11.
Bodoni (don' thin that did it.)
GM says, "sorry"
Bodoni Cries out "Arrrrrgh!"
Bodoni (hey, these things happen ;D)
Corin jumps from his horse and starts scrambling up the ridge.
GM says, "looking from below, you see the silhouette of bodoni turn suddenly then fall as a huge shape knocks him over"
Corin climbs as fast as he can upwards.
GM says, "corin, roll climbing at a +2"
Bodoni tries desperately to push it off or away, struggling "Arrrgh!"
Joseph tries to climb also
Corin rolls 3 + 0.
Result [2 1 6] = 9 + 0 = 9.
Renard [to GM]: -- how long does it take to climb up the ridge?
GM says, "corin climbs well, but it will take several seconds at least"
Renard says, "Johan, give me a boost, then come up after me!"
Renard -- we'll climb up the point of the ridge to which we've ridden -- some distance down from Bodoni...
GM [to Renard]: it's 1 foot every 5 seconds for a vertical stone wall, but this is easier... let's say 1 foot per second as an ordinary tree
GM says, "so that makes 20 seconds"
GM says, "corin makes it in 10 because of his high skill and good roll"
GM says, "so hang on a moment while i see if bodoni lives"
Bodoni (lol...)
Corin [mince meat *grin*]
GM says, "Faiseric and Godefridel, btw, are also climbing frantically"
Bodoni (lunch for some furball...;D)
GM says, "bodoni, the wolf-thing bites at your neck and misses"
Corin [is the thing standing over him?]
Corin [and how far away am I?]
Bodoni struggles desperately tries to swing at the thing while prone with the mace
GM [to Corin]: you're climbing for the next 10 seconds, so i'll inform you when you can do something else
Corin [nod]
Renard [to Bodoni]: you might be better off leaping back down.
GM [to Bodoni]: roll your attack at -1 for effects of drinking, -1 for one eye, -2 for being prone, and -2 for darkness and close combat with a 1-hex weapon, total -6
Bodoni (it's on top of me, renard)
Bodoni (I don't think I can get away like that, right?)
GM says, "it's grappling you, so you'd have to break the grapple first"
Renard [to Bodoni]: all-out-attack to break the grapple and shove it off you.
GM [to Renard]: ok, but THIS ROUND he's swinging his mace rather wildly at it
Bodoni (okay)
GM [to Renard]: and shut up, you're climbing
Bodoni (I need to roll?)
GM says, "yep"
GM says, "target 6, but you might make it"
Bodoni rolls 3 + 0.
Result [2 1 4] = 7 + 0 = 7.
Bodoni (think I made it by 1)
GM says, "so close... and yet so far... your maces whizzes past the wolf as you swing awkwardly at it"
GM says, "missed by 1, actually"
Bodoni (ah... oh well.. ;D)
Renard [to GM]: the guy's a veteran -- I'm a voice of suggestion from his experience... no?
Bodoni gives a furious cry
Caralchis has arrived.
Bodoni (sorry Renard, most of my training didn't focus on attacks by giant, demonic wolves. ;D)
GM [to Bodoni]: the wolf bites again, this time hitting your neck... you can dodge but that's it and you get a -3 net to dodge
Bodoni (i'll dodge)
Bodoni rolls 3 + 0.
Result [2 1 2] = 5 + 0 = 5.
GM says, "the man MAKES HIS DODGE!!!"
Corin [nice]
Joseph says, "good going"
GM is impressed
Caralchis says, "(completely forgot about the session and just got back from a friend's house. figured I'd drop in)"
Bodoni (hiya Caralchis.. I'm busy being eaten by a wolf. ;D)
GM [to Bodoni]: you needed a 6 to dodge and rolled a 5
GM says, "what's your move this round, bodoni?"
Bodoni (I'll try and all out break his grapple, and scramble away from him)
GM says, "ok, this is a contest of ST"
GM says, "bodoni, roll against ST, with +2 for AOA"
Bodoni rolls 3 + 0.
Result [3 6 5] = 14 + 0 = 14.
GM says, "you're still grappled"
Bodoni (damn)
GM says, "the wolf is immensely strong, much more so than any wolf you've EVER seen"
GM says, "round 3 begins"
GM says, "what are you going to do, bodoni?"
Bodoni (tries again to aoa break grapple)
Corin [a round isn't about 10 seconds?]
Bodoni (roll again?)
GM [to Corin]: a round is ONE second
Corin [ouch]
GM [to Corin]: you're still in D&D-land :)
GM says, "ok, the wolf is trying to bite again"
Bodoni (okay)
GM says, "let's see another dodge, and you'll want to try that contest of ST again"
Bodoni rolls 3 + 0.
Result [3 1 6] = 10 + 0 = 10.
GM says, "so two rolls, one against a 6 and one against your ST+2"
GM says, "ok, missed your dodge this time"
Bodoni rolls 3 + 0.
Result [2 3 6] = 11 + 0 = 11.
GM says, "and didn't break the grapple"
Bodoni (oops...)
Bodoni (kibble...)
GM rolls 1 + 2.
Result [6] = 6 + 2 = 8.
Corin [can i have your stuff, bodoni?]
Bodoni manages a gurgled cry (sure, Corin, if the wolf doesn't eat it, too. ;D)
Renard [to Corin]: if you can get it...
GM says, "wups, rolled that non-secretly... ok, the bite does 8 damage to the neck of bodoni"
GM says, "you wearing a helmet, bodoni?"
Corin [the headless Bodoni.]
Bodoni (uh... i don't think so... NOPE... pretty sure. just the breast plate)
Bodoni life flashes before his eyes
GM says, "ok, the hit is double damage so you're now at -11 hits"
Bodoni (hhe)
Corin wonders if he should slow down his climbing.
Renard glances at Faiseric
GM [to Bodoni]: roll HT
Bodoni (do I need to roll?)
Bodoni rolls 3 + 0.
Result [4 3 5] = 12 + 0 = 12.
GM says, "you made it, so you stay conscious"
GM says, "however, i'm going to assume that in the next couple of seconds, you are unconscious, because with pain of -8 next round you're basically screwed... of course, we can game it out if you INSIST :)"
Bodoni (What would be better?)
Bodoni (I think I'll take your offer of Ko'ed..)
Corin [close your eyes and pray]
Corin [I arrive in 10 sec, the rest arrive in 20, 10 seconds of fighting this wolf, i dont like it....]
Bodoni (will I have any long term damage from this wound?)
GM says, "ok, bodoni goes limp and the wolf walks to the ridge edge and looks down"
Corin looks up as he climbs.
GM [to Bodoni]: probably, but we'll have to find out later
Bodoni (okie..this is fun. :D)
Corin stops when he sees the wolf peering over.
GM says, "the wolf's muzzle is soaked with blood. corin, you're about 7 feet below it"
Corin [Can i fire an arrow?]
Renard [to GM]: -- roll call... what's everyone else doing?
GM [to Bodoni]: yeah, you've been the damage sink so far :)
GM [to Corin]: how many hands do you have?
Bodoni (Uh... I'm lying unconcious on the ground, and bleeding to death..)
Corin says, "rofl"
Corin holds on with one hand and throws a rock with another at the wolf.
GM says, "everyone was climbing frantically, but they all stop at this point and look at Faiseric"
Bodoni (told ya you should have picked the 4-armed archer, Corin. ;D)
GM says, "renard, you were about as far up as corin because of the boost from johan"
Renard [to GM]: how far down the ridge from the action/
GM says, "ok, corin, roll to hit at DX-4 with an extra -4 for awkwardness and firing upwards"
GM [to Renard]: just a few yards
Corin rolls 3 + 0.
Result [3 2 5] = 10 + 0 = 10.
GM says, "the rock whizzes past the wolf harmlessly. the wolf growls and bares its teeth, then raises its head and bays loudly."
Bodoni (It probably hits me, when it misses the wolf. ;D)
GM [to Bodoni]: hey, yeah, where are the friendly fire rules? :)
Corin [uh-oh, its calling the others.]
Renard [to Corin]: keep it distracted ;)
Corin yells at the wolf. "arggg! you ugly varmit!" and grabs another rock.
GM says, "well, this isn't such a positive note to end on, but we might literally call it another cliffhanger :)"
Bodoni (This was fun. :D)
Renard [to GM]: ugh.
Caralchis says, "ooooh what an inevitable pun"
Corin says, "hee - hee a real cliffhanger!"
Joseph says, "good game"
GM says, "i was hoping we'd get farther this week, but that's ok... we'll continue next week"
GM says, "*** END SESSION ***"
