GM says, "when we wrapped up last time you were negotiating with the bishop of Lugdunum about selling your figurines"
GM says, "any new ideas along that line?"
Renard says, "[Joseph being the point man on these issues...]"
Bodoni (I just want to speak with the Bishop alone.)
Joseph says, "(Joseph's blind loyality to the holy mother church is badly shaken at this point) ... Your excellency, perhaps a dontation to the *leadership* fund of this church would be in order..."
GM [to Joseph]: point of information: leadership fund? is that a technical term?
Joseph says, "kindly insert any period-appropriate euphamisim you can think of."
Renard says, "Perhaps there is a convent or monastary that would appreciate your efforts more, Joseph"
Renard says, "Madame _, what do you think about this? "
GM [to Joseph]: would that mean a donation to a fund that helps select the leaders of the church, like a search committee? (sorry, i'm not intimately familiar with the catholic church)
GM [to Joseph]: (this is all out of context, of course)
Bodoni stands by and watches the show
Joseph says, "Perhaps you're right, Renard. Thank you for your time your execllency..."
Bodoni says, "Your Excellency?"
GM says, "[Convenitus] *shaking his head, heavy jowls waving* a most unseemly suggestion, young man, MOST unseemly."
Joseph says, "ooc (re: leadership fund) he's the *bishop* right? he's the leader. I figure he's skimming money into a personal retirement fund somewhere"
GM says, "[Convenitus] Father Theudar would not be proud of your actions at this moment, of that i am certain"
GM [to Joseph]: ooc: gotcha. i wasn't sure if the implication was that he was skimming money or that he should be replaced.
Renard [does Joseph have Catholic savoir-faire?
GM shakes head
Joseph says, "(to everyone else) shall we go?"
GM says, "[Portia] *looking horrified* Bishop Convenitus? you won't grant their simple request?"
GM says, "[Portia] please, Joseph, wait, we can work this out i'm sure"
Joseph looks expectantly at Portia
Bodoni says, "Aye, I'm sure the good Bishop is a man of god."
GM says, "[Convenitus] things are different here, dear Portia. we must be more careful here among the heathen nations. perhaps we could discuss this further in private sometime?"
Joseph says, "Thank you for your time, your excellency"
GM says, "[Portia] indeed, Joseph, i think you are right. we'll take our leave now."
Bodoni having wanted to speak to the bishop about the artist and Portia. Assumes he most likely would't care, so decides to take the party tonight as it comes
Joseph bows, but diliberately does not kiss the bishops ring, and leaves
GM says, "you file out of the villa"
GM says, "Portia seems shocked and indignant"
Bodoni leaves with the others
Joseph says, "(to everyone) sorry about that guys, I guess we carried these statues today for nothing."
Renard says, "Madame Portia, are there no convents or monastaries in the city that might appreciate our services?"
Caralchis says, "I don't think it necessary for you to apologize, you did what you could"
Bodoni says, "Tis okay, lad, ye did yer best. Tis all that matters, lad."
GM says, "[Portia] yes, indeed there are, although i had not planned to visit them this afternoon"
GM says, "[Portia] Convenitus was an old family friend back home, and i wished to bid him greetings and congratulate him on his advancement in the church. i see now that his success has not been good for him."
Bodoni says, "Perhaps the good bishop is still a man of gold, Milady...Ah...my apologies... I of course me man of god."
Bodoni (me=mean)
GM says, "Portia laughs weakly"
Joseph says, "(to Portia) with a name like Convenitus, how could he be any other way ;-)"
GM says, "[Portia] i feel a strong need to bathe. will you escort me to the baths?"
GM says, "Corin rushes up while you are standing around outside the church talking"
Bodoni nods "As ye like, milady. Come on lads."
Bodoni looks
Joseph follows
GM says, "he seems excited by something and you noticed him stuffing something he had been carrying into his belt pouch when he saw Portia"
Renard says, "Ah, I vaguely remember a thing called 'civilization', now that you mention the baths!"
GM says, "(ooc: in case you forgot, Corin had left you before you went in to see the Bishop)"
Renard [is that a _ you've got in you 'belt pouch' or are you just glad to see me?, says Portia]
Bodoni says, "Aye. 'Baths' Looks happily...ach...what has ye so vexed Corin?"
GM [to Renard]: yeah, i saw that one coming, but thanks :)
GM says, "[Corin] we're taking Portia to the baths?!"
GM says, "he's not quite sure what that means, but the implications sound pretty good"
Bodoni (Joseph!!! Don't tell Corin that! He's likely to explode! :D)
Bodoni (Ach... Nevermind, Joseph.. ;D)
Bodoni Starts off, leading the others to follow
GM says, "Portia goes to the best baths in Lugdunum, of course. Unfortunately for Corin, Roman baths are separated by sex, so while she goes into the women's bath the rest of you are left to wait. the men's bath is right next door, however"
GM says, "whatcha wanna do for the 90 minutes or so that you'll have before she re-emerges?"
Bodoni (Gambling? :D)
Renard says, "I'll spring for a bath (or borrow the money from Corin, and invite him along for to show him the Roman ways)"
Caralchis will probably just follow Bodoni and keep him from getting in too much trouble
Joseph heads for the bath
Caralchis (unless his company is not wanted)
Bodoni (You want to bathe, Caralchis? :D)
GM [to Bodoni]: ooc: there are games in the baths
Bodoni (Exccelent! That solves both my problems..!!!)
Caralchis will have a bath, then
GM says, "so you might as well try them out... a few of you (joseph, renard, johan, corin) have little to no experience with roman baths, although you might have heard of them. it should be interesting"
Bodoni says, "Ah, I proper roman bath. I'd been quite a time."

Renard -- gotta go, hopefully we can play a full session next weekend (though my sister's visiting) -- i wish i could hang for bath rpging
Renard has disconnected.
GM says, "you go in, and it's pretty expensive... $5 each"
Joseph says, "ouch!"
GM says, "but the service is excellent. you remove your clothing and it is taken away by slaves to be laundered."
Bodoni Gives the cash anyway, having looked forward to such a rare treat
Joseph pays the $5 an hopes its worth it
GM says, "there are several things to do in the bathhouse"
Caralchis pays as well
GM says, "in the unctuarium, you get annointed head to toe with olive oil"
GM says, "in the sudatorium, the oil is scraped off again"
The housekeeper arrives to cart Renard off to bed.
GM says, "in the frigidium, you can bathe in cold water, and in the therma hot water"
Bodoni (Wow! Really good service. They even carted Renard off to bed! HEhehehehehe)
GM says, "there are pools of various sizes and depths"
GM says, "in addition, there are rooms where games can be played, similar to modern racquetball."
GM says, "when older folks come in, they usually go straight for the unctuarium, then the sudatorium, and then the thermae. but the younger folk often participate in the games first to work up a sweat, then off to the rest of it."
Caralchis says, "anyone up for a game of raquetball?"
Johan2 [Guest] has arrived.

Joseph says, "let's try this new game, Caralchis"
GM says, "hi there johan"
Caralchis says, "Alright.. I make up the rules!"
Bodoni Bodoni decided to bathe first, then play some 'games'
GM says, "there are paddles and a ball, and you play in a room enclosed on three sides. caralchis knows how to play from previous experience"
Johan2 [Guest] says, "forgive me being quite while I catch up"
Johan2 [Guest] says, "quite=quiet"
GM says, "the idea is basically to bat the ball back and forth and keep it in the air"
GM [to Johan2 [Guest]]: no problem
GM says, "joseph and caralchis, make DX rolls"
Caralchis rolls 3 + 0.
Result [3 1 4] = 8 + 0 = 8.
Joseph rolls 3 + 0.
Result [1 5 4] = 10 + 0 = 10.
GM says, "caralchis wins the first game easily. when the game is over, you notice a couple of young men watching you play."
Bodoni starts looking for a game after a refreshing bath
Joseph says, "want to play again?"
Caralchis acknowledges the watchers with a nod of the head
Caralchis says, "sure, this brings back memories"
GM says, "[spectator #1] good game! you look like you've played before!"
Caralchis says, "I have, a while ago, my companion has not, though. He did quite well considering"
GM says, "[spectator #1] my friend is also just learning, but you play better than i. would you care to switch for a game or two?"
Bodoni (Why do I hear the theme song from jaws in my head? ;P :D)
Caralchis Looks to Joseph, "what do you think?"
GM [to Bodoni]: now come on, does something bad happen in every encounter?
Bodoni (Hehehe....well... :))
Joseph says, "(perhaps foolishly) ok. lets switch"
GM says, "the spectators introduce themselves as Gudinand and Polonius. Gudinand is the learner, and joins Caralchis for a game while Polonius and Joseph move to the next court"
GM says, "caralchis, another DX roll"
Caralchis rolls 3 + 0.
Result [4 5 6] = 15 + 0 = 15.
Caralchis says, "(ouch, well i didn't want to beat him completely anyway...)"
GM says, "joseph, you too"
Joseph rolls 3 + 0.
Result [1 4 2] = 7 + 0 = 7.
GM [to Caralchis]: you struggle quite a bit, but of course Gudinand is a raw beginner and you find a way to win
GM [to Joseph]: as for yourself, you play quite well and in a hard-fought match squeak out a surprising win!
Joseph says, "yay!"
GM says, "[Gudinand] i see how you do that, caralchis! the backhand should be held THIS way. ok, i'll try that"
Joseph gathers himelf, good game Polonius, (shakes his hand)
GM says, "[Polonius] ye gods! for a beginner you are quite skilled, joseph"
Caralchis says, "Yes, that is an important point.. you played well, though"
GM says, "[Gudinand] another game, caralchis? this time, perhaps we could place a small wager on it. what's the point in playing if it isn't for something, right?"
Joseph says, "(to Polonius) I had a good teacher in Caralchis"
Caralchis says, "I suppose that couldn't hurt.. as long as 'small'means the same thing to each of us"
Caralchis hopes he wasn't just pretending to be bad
GM says, "[Gudinand] shall we say $1 a point?"
GM says, "ooc: note that games are played to 15"
Caralchis says, "That seems reasonable"
GM says, "very well, then!"
GM [to Caralchis]: DX roll
Caralchis rolls 3 + 0.
Result [2 6 5] = 13 + 0 = 13.
GM says, "once again, you feel you could be playing better but win anyway, by 7 points this time"
GM says, "[Gudinand] ach, i must work on this. i have time for only one more game, and you must give me a final chance to win my money back. last game, $2 per point?"
Caralchis does that mean I make $7?
GM nods
Caralchis agrees to another game
GM [to Joseph]: you and polonius watch
GM says, "[Polonius] (to joseph) want to place a side bet?"
Joseph says, "no thanks, I don't gamble"
GM says, "Polonius looks slightly offended, but doesn't push it"
GM says, "caralchis, make a DX roll"
Caralchis rolls 3 + 0.
Result [4 4 6] = 14 + 0 = 14.
Caralchis says, "damn"
GM says, "hmmmm.... Gudinand seems to have learned pretty well from the first two games, and you continue to struggle with your control. he wins by 9 points, putting you in the hole for $11."
GM says, "[Gudinand] well played, caralchis, and thanks for the lessons!"
Caralchis shakes his head, "seems Luck has abandonned me today"
GM says, "gudinand waits expectantly"
Caralchis takes out his money purse and counts eleven whatevers and hands them to Gudinand and congratulates him on the good game
GM says, "Gudinand smiles, bows in thanks and the two bid you farewell and move on the unctuarium"
Bodoni Bodoni looks for a dice table
Joseph says, "come on Caralchis, we'll be late if we don"
Joseph says, "...if we don't hurry""
GM [to Bodoni]: there's nothing formal, but when you reach the therma there are several men lounging in the water throwing dice on the side and having a general good time
GM [to Bodoni]: they don't mind taking on another player
Bodoni quickly joins in
GM [to Bodoni]: make a Gambling roll
Bodoni rolls 3 + 0.
Result [3 2 1] = 6 + 0 = 6.
Bodoni (kick butt.. :D)
Caralchis (Lucky!)
GM [to Bodoni]: nicely done... among the four other men, one of them seems pretty knowledgeable about the more obscure rules
GM [to Bodoni]: but you get lucky and win $20 from them over the course of half an hour
Bodoni (Nods head...grins)
GM says, "when all of this is complete, you realize that Portia should be finishing up soon"
Johan2 [Guest] says, "is Portia taking a bath here? "
Bodoni Reluctatly leaves the gambling group, to find the others
GM [to Johan2 [Guest]]: in the women's baths... it's separated by sex
GM says, "so you finish cleaning up, return to the dressing area to discover that your clothes have been cleaned as well as possible without actually washing them (impossible to dry within the short time requirement)"
GM says, "and leave in time to meet Portia"
GM says, "we'll pick it up next time with the banquet, since there's nothing left to do that afternoon. so be thinking about what you want to take and so on, ok?"
GM says, "*** END SESSION ***"
