Caralchis says, "sure"
GM says, "*** START SESSION ***"
GM says, "so last time you were branded and handed over to Augax."
GM says, "corin is still about, in the crowd. Modag has gone off to talk to Lord Euric. Joseph has been led away, and you have lost sight of him."
Bodoni (I noticed we stopped just before our Lord gets his head chopped off? We will not be there, I assume.)
GM [to Bodoni]: you basically saw the blade fall as you lost sight of him.
Bodoni (ah. Okay, then.)
GM says, "Augax leads the slaves - Caralchis, Bodoni, Johan and Renard - out of the city center and to a little inn in the outskirts of town."
Corin follows at a safe distance.
GM says, "this one's not as nice as Faustulus' inn. probably cheaper, though."
GM [to Corin]: it gets harder and harder to be stealthy as the crowds thin out. if you're trying to remain unnoticed, give me a Stealth roll. you'll be at a penalty.
Bodoni despairs over the mess things have become and his son's current predicament
Corin says, "((once away from the guards, no stealth roll. Augax does not know me.)"
Corin tries to walk nonchalantly along.
Caralchis is grimly silent for the whole walk to the inn
GM says, "Augax doesn't talk much as you walk along. you're not sure if he's respecting your loss or is just a quiet guy, though."
GM [to Corin]: you see Augax take the four into the inn. do you follow? it'll be sort of obvious that you're following if you do.
Corin stops a fair distance from the inn. Seeing them enter, he is unsure what to do.
Renard [Guest] has arrived.
Renard_ [Guest] says, "bah. netzero dumped me off."
Corin decides to wait here a while.
GM says, "upon entering, Augax asks, "when was the last time any of you ate?""
Corin says, "((Bodoni will like this guy))"
Bodoni perks up "t'was a time ago."
GM says, "[Augax] i figured as much. prison food not that plentiful?"
Bodoni says, "Nay...tis not at that."
GM says, "he calls for the innkeeper to bring food, and finds a large table in the corner."
GM says, "[Augax] i would tell you something of my plans."
Renard has disconnected.
Bodoni starts to eat when the food arrives
GM says, "[Augax] you may be wondering why i, a simple tradesman, could afford to buy such strapping slave warriors as you. or why i would WANT to."
Bodoni says, "Then, you're purchase was part of some plan you say?"
Bodoni having suspected something amiss before, but listening
Bodoni (that should be your, not you're)
Caralchis muches his food and listens
GM says, "(food arrives shortly. there is wine, cheese, dark bread, sausages, and grapes.)"
Caralchis (munches)
GM says, "[Augax] you are my slaves, and i certainly do not HAVE to explain myself to you. but i find that people who understand things serve better."
GM says, "[Augax] i had two reasons for buying you. the first is simple: i wanted to annoy Lord Euric!"
Bodoni says nothing of that, yet, but listens, chewing on a piece of cheese and sasuage
GM says, "[Augax] it was obvious he wanted you, but that overblown hot-head needed a good comeuppance."
GM says, "[Augax] he's nothing like his father, that's sure."
Bodoni (his father would be the one that the barbarians killed? Do I remember that right?)
The housekeeper arrives to cart Renard off to bed.
GM says, "[Augax] but that, pleasant as it was in point of fact, was not my primary reason. let me tell you a little story..."
Renard_ [Guest] says, "brb""
GM [to Bodoni]: (ooc: yessir, that's the one. had a good reputation, that guy)
Renard_ [Guest] has disconnected.
The housekeeper arrives to remove Renard_ [Guest].
Renard has arrived.
Renard says, "voila"
GM says, "[Augax] have any of you ever been to the sea?"
Bodoni (Did I in any of my days as a soldier?)
Caralchis says, "I've seen the Mediterranean"
Renard shakes his head 'no', eating with restraint, silently awaiting Augux' full explanation before kissing his ass for being such a great owner
Bodoni says, "I spent some time at sea in my youth as a soldier in the Roman army."
Corin says, "((is it legal to kill your slave?))"
GM [to Corin]: it's technically legal, but discouraged.
GM says, "[Augax] good, good! two of you. well, you may know that centuries ago, before the Mediterranean was Roman-controlled, it was Greek controlled."
GM says, "[Augax] hard to believe, i know, that that society of degenerates ever had an empire. but it's well documented. for that matter, it's hard to believe that Rome ever controlled an empire, either, but we all know about THAT."
Bodoni wisely hold his tongue, and waits "Aye...if ye say so."
GM says, "[Augax] so this Greek noble, from whence i cannot say exactly, left his homeland."
GM says, "[Augax] he travelled across the sea, with his entire household: his family, his slaves, his soldiers. he found a tiny island to the west, and he landed there and colonized it."
GM says, "[Augax] what happened next i do not quite know, but i believe there is a great treasure on that island. i have been to that island and i know that it exists. i want you to help me get it."
GM says, "[Augax] if we succeed, the reward for you help will be manumission."
Corin says, "((new word for me...grin))"
Bodoni (Me too. though I suspect..)
GM says, "(ooc: manumission = he frees you)"
Corin says, "((freedom?))"
Bodoni (yup.. that's what I figured)
Caralchis says, "(brb.. call of nature)"
Renard- [Guest] has arrived.
Corin gets impatient outside and walks into the inn. He stops at the door, letting his eyes adjust, then approaches the bar. He avoids locking eyes with his friends.
Renard- [Guest] says, "happened again"
Bodoni turns to the others, speaking around a sausage and a hunk of bread "What say you, men? This may be a chance to regain out rightful freedom, and we may be able to save Joseph as well."
Corin [to bartender,]: "I am looking for a man they called Augax. Is he here?"
GM says, "[Augax] save Joseph? are you talking about the slave Euric bought for about three times his value?"
Bodoni empahsizes "My son."
GM says, "when Corin enters, Augax clams up and looks at him suspiciously."
Bodoni says, "I will not let him rot to that bastard, of that, you be assured.""
GM [to Corin]: when you walk inside, the only people in the place are Augax and the four slaves, sitting at a table in the corner. Augax is staring at you.
Corin hesitates, takes a deep breath and approaches Augax slowly.
Corin nods slightly, smiling a little.
GM says, "Augax holds up a hand to Bodoni in a 'wait' motion"
GM says, "[Augax] (gruffly) can i help you?"
Bodoni is a bit 'put off' by the gesture, but grudingly obeys for the moment
GM says, "(that was to Corin)"
Corin [to AUgax]: "Pardon my rudeness. May I have a word with you? Alone?"
Bodoni wonders what Corin is up to
Renard has disconnected.
Renard- [Guest] has disconnected.
The housekeeper arrives to remove Renard- [Guest].
Renard has connected.
GM [to Corin]: [Augax] you may say anything you wish in front of my slaves.
Caralchis says, "b"
Bodoni 's good eye twitches at the word
Corin looks quickly at the others and continues."There is rumor outside that you may be looking for some good men. I am in need of work myself, and offer my services."
Renard barely restrains from shaking his head in disbelief
GM [to Corin]: [Augax] i don't know how such a rumor could have gotten started. i have the men i need here.
Corin says, "The people talk fast when an auction is handled like it was. I am sure that I would be an asset to these slaves. Perhaps make sure they dont run? OR plot escape?""
Bodoni takes a gamble and decides to speak "Ye have little to fear from the lad."
Corin coughs at Bodoni's words.
GM says, "(ooc: you know, taken together those two things sound rather bad. i'm going to say that Corin spoke first. Bodoni, do you still want to say what you did?)"
Bodoni (Okay, I'll strike that, then..)
Corin says, "(maybe my cough hid it)"
Bodoni (seeing as how he was clearly typing it out before I finished mine.)
GM says, "(ooc: right)"
Corin says, "((the disadvantage of typing conversations))"
GM says, "[Augax] i am not overly concerned about their escaping. if they do, they will be hunted men the rest of their lives. that is a powerful disincentive."
Corin nods.
Corin says, "Well, you bid on the other slave, which you lost. So you need another?""
Corin says, "If I dont work out, you can dismiss me at any time, of course.""
GM says, "[Augax] (smiling slightly) i lost the bid, but i drove the price up, didn't i?"
Corin grins. "Aye, you did that."
GM says, "[Augax] i do not need another. why do you want to work for me, anyway? surely there are other lines of work in this city."
GM says, "[Augax] how do you even know me?"
Corin says, "well, can I just say that Euric does not like me, and that makes life hard for me here.""
Corin says, "A man called Modag told me of you.""
GM says, "[Augax] Modag, hmmmm. i don't believe i know a man by that name. perhaps my reputation precedes me, though."
GM says, "[Augax] and you are on Euric's bad side, eh? well, i think that makes two of us. hahaha!"
Renard says, "Modag is a Greek, I believe"
Corin says, "He knew little of you, and guessed you may be in need of men though. Yes, Euric is no friend of mine.""
Renard says, "a seer of some sort..."
GM says, "[Augax] (wrinkling his brow) Modag is an odd name for a Greek, that is sure. how do YOU know this Modag, Renard?"
Corin looks pointedly at Renard, with a blank expression.
Renard says, "We all came across him at Euric's villa, when we were escorting the Lady Portia"
GM says, "[Augax] you... ALL... came across him? (he looks from Corin to Renard)"
Bodoni continues to eat, glancing around every now and again
Caralchis says, "(has it been made publicly known that what of us escaped?)"
GM says, "[Augax] Renard, do you know this lad?"
GM [to Caralchis]: (ooc: you've been in prison, so you don't know)
Renard [to GM]: why would 'we all' include Corin? I meant the whole gang of slaves. It was mentioned in the trial that we all escorted Portia to Euric's, right?
GM [to Renard]: in context it sounds like you meant 'all' to be inclusive of everyone present.
Corin ignores Renard and addresses Augax, "So, do you see now? An enemy of Euric is surely a friend of yours!"
Corin says, "((can i use savoir-faire here?))"
GM [to Corin]: yep
Corin says, "((roll?))"
GM [to Corin]: but probably at a penalty, depending on how susceptible Augax is to such things.
Corin says, "((seems like he is bending....))"
Corin says, "((eeek, i am not good at it anyway))"
Corin says, "((not too applicable anyway, reading its definition))"
GM says, "(sorry for the delay - whispering)"
Renard looks nervous, caught offguard...
Renard says, "... I didn't say... I mean, Corin was there..."
Corin says, "You are talking of Euric's party? I was talking with Modag there.""
GM says, "[Augax] Corin was there, at Euric's villa you mean?"
Renard says, "right."
GM says, "[Augax] (to Corin) you're Corin, then?"
Renard furrows his brow in frustration
Corin looks straight at Augax. "Augax, I have a confession. I am no traitor or spy. But my name is Corin."
GM says, "[Augax] i am no Burgundian and have no love for them, so whatever acts you did or did not do against them do not bother me."
Renard standing up, shrugging off his anxious quivering, "Finally - it's always better to come clean. Besides, Augax here is showing himself to be most reasonable and civilized.
Bodoni continues to munch as he listens
Corin says, "These men are my friends. I seek merely their company. Euric has lied and called us all traitors. It is not true, and we are wrongly accused.""
Bodoni mumbles with an agreement with Corin's statement through a mouthful of food
GM says, "[Augax] i see. (he purses his lips again, coming to a quick decision) it was brave of you to come in here, and it showed admirable loyalty to your friends here."
Corin says, "I fear for my own freedom, and so I did not admit it openly.""
Corin says, "And as you can understand, I cannot stay here.""
Renard says, "Corin, why don't you tell us what you've been up to since we were captured - we saw you in the crowd at the trial..."
Corin looks at Augax, "May I sit with you? And tell my story?"
GM says, "[Augax] you may join this company, but not as my hireling. you must pay your own way. and if you attempt to lie to me again, it will go poorly with you."
Corin nods gravely.
GM says, "[Augax] sit down and speak."
Renard says, "Augax - he's a young impulsive boy. But quite reliable when under adult guidance..."
Corin pulls up a stool and tells his story to the others.
Corin grins at Renard, "looks like I did quite well alone, thank you very much."
Corin tells them everything that he has done in the meantime.
GM says, "[Augax] this Modag sounds like quite the interesting fellow."
Corin reminds them he still has the carruca.
Corin says, "Modag has been a good friend.""
GM says, "[Augax] he is a Greek seer?"
Corin says, "Not sure what that is, but he sees the future, that much I know.""
Corin says, "Looks at rocks, runes or stars and such.""
GM says, "[Augax] Renard mentioned that he was Greek. but his name sounds barbarian, like mine."
Bodoni chuckles, and indicates Renard "Our friend takes fearful about him"
Corin looks at Augax. "My funds are limited. Will my services pay my way?"
Renard glares, "Well, he plays with evil forces...
GM says, "[Augax] (to corin) we shall see about that. perhaps. but not at first."
Corin nods. "Fair enough."
GM says, "[Augax] i would like to meet this Modag. can you arrange that?"
Corin says, "((was Garomach a Burgundian?))"
Renard [to Corin]: garomach was frankish
Corin hesitates. "You would not harm him?"
GM says, "[Augax] harm him? why would i do that?"
Bodoni brightens a bit knowing that he fianlly may have chance to win back his freedom and rescue his son
Corin shrugs, "I am leery of everything these days. I'm sorry..."
Corin says, "I know where Modag lives, yes.""
Corin says, "Shall I bring him here?""
GM says, "[Augax] yes, that would be fine. around sundown, let us say."
Corin nods. "Want me to go tell him now?"
Bodoni slowly but surely overdoes his partaking of the food, and is soon a little -more- than full
GM says, "[Augax] (spreading his hands) up to you, lad. you're a free agent."
Corin [to Augax]: "When do you plan on leaving town?"
GM says, "[Augax] within the next few days, i expect."
Renard says, "So what about Joseph, anyhow?"
Corin stands, "I will go to Modag now and tell him you wish to meet him."
Bodoni says, "This plan seems to be the only way we can even start to begin his eventualy rescue. I doubt our current...'employer' would be so inclined as to do anything about the situation."
Bodoni said to Renard
Corin looks at his friends, "Stay strong. See ya soon!"
Bodoni (eventual, not eventualy)
Corin [to Augax]: "thanks for understanding me, Augax, and giving me a chance."
Corin bows his head slightly, and leaves the inn.
GM says, "Augax nods"
GM says, "[Augax] i will need to make certain arrangements for our trip, including transportation and supplies."
Bodoni barely supresses a burp
GM says, "[Augax] you wait here. i have arranged with the innkeeper for you to sleep in the stables, so you may retire there."
Renard- [Guest] has arrived.
Renard- [Guest] says, "three time's a charm"
Renard- [Guest] [to Augax]: Are we free to wander town and taunt Euric?
GM says, "he rises from the table, gestures to the innkeeper to clear the table, and starts to leave."
Bodoni (Nah, he said we were supposed to wait for him here)
GM says, "[Augax] (to renard) No, stay here. i'll not risk my investment."
Renard- [Guest] [to alland]: what was to happen with joseph?
GM says, "Augax leaves, so you guys can make whatevr Joseph plans you like now."
Bodoni turns slowly to Renard "What think you about Joseph? I cannot fathom a way to lead him from the clutches of that devil."
Corin will be right back.
Renard- [Guest] says, "It's up to Corin and Modag, I suppose, since Augax shows no interest"
Corin says, "b"
Bodoni says, "By the sheer amount, I do not hold any action Modag of Corin is high faith of succeeding."
Corin says, "((what time is it gametime?))"
GM says, "ooc: in all fairness, you've barely even tried to convince him. Corin came and distracted you when Bodoni was talking about him. it's not exactly his top priority, of course."
Bodoni (any action OF Modag OR Corin)
GM [to Corin]: early afternoon
GM [to Corin]: you get to Modag's place and he's not there, so you sit down to wait. his landlord knows you by now and lets you in easily.
Renard has disconnected.
Corin says, "((Geez, Renard needs to pay an ISP))"
Renard- [Guest] says, "bah"
Corin says, "((heh))"
Renard- [Guest] says, "so ... ff to some action, then"
GM says, "maybe we should take up a collection? :)"
Corin says, "lol"
GM says, "sure, we can compress time forwards if you aren't doing anything"
Bodoni (Hey! Gurps: Low Tech coming in Febuary. *throws confetti* :D)
Corin says, "((does MOdag come home before sundown?))"
GM [to Corin]: the sun is getting low in the sky when Modag returns. he looks grave.
Corin says, "What is wrong, Modag?"
GM says, "[Modag] Joseph is not safe. not at all. if you want to get him back unharmed, you will need to hurry."
Bodoni (wouldn't it be funny is Modag was right about the end of the world? :D)
Corin says, "Me? What can I do?""
GM says, "[Modag] i don't know. did you speak with Augax?"
Corin says, "Euric's place is crawling with guards. Yes, AUgax wants to meet you. Can you come now?""
Corin says, "He said sundown.""
GM says, "[Modag] yes."
Bodoni (If you're really a Goth, where were you when we sacked Rome?)
The housekeeper arrives to cart Renard off to bed.
Corin says, "lets hurry then."
GM says, "you go back to the inn where Augax is staying"
Corin says, "((Augax there?))"
GM says, "Augax is not back yet himself when Corin and modag get there"
Corin looks at the setting sun. "He should be here soon."
Corin says, "What are they doing to Joseph?""
GM says, "[Modag] i spoke with Lord Euric. at first, he wasn't forthcoming at all about his plans. i offered to buy him back; i offered to trade him."
Bodoni (we are there yes?)
GM says, "i'm assuming everyone is together, except Joseph of course"
Corin says, "And?""
Bodoni perks up at Joseph's name
GM says, "[Modag] i didn't get the plan exactly, but Joseph's life is in danger. Euric has hired the magician Alkasirus as well, and i think that relates somehow."
Caralchis says, "A magician... that definately is owrrying"
Corin says, "well, Augax better return fast. What will we be able to do?""
Bodoni angrily "The man is now man, but a devil. Surly ripped from his mother's very womb to have such diabolical designs!"
Bodoni says, "Fate will not allow us to wait. We must get Joseph back..."
Bodoni (now= not a... *sigh*...really medicated this morning.)
Corin says, "((pre-suberbowl medication?))"
GM says, "[Modag] Alkasirus is an Arab - his real name is Al-Khaz, but he goes by the Latinized version. he whores his services freely to the upper classes. word is he is a freed slave. we've never gotten along."
Renard- [Guest] says, "Can we catch him asleep and slit his throat?"
Renard- [Guest] says, with a slightly crazed gleam in his eye...
Bodoni (No...I've got a bad cold or a light flu...really fell like crap.)
Renard- [Guest] has disconnected.
The housekeeper arrives to remove Renard- [Guest].
Renard has arrived.
GM says, "[Modag] (to renard) kill Al-Khaz? i do not like him, but he is not my sworn enemy or yours. it is Lord Euric who is doing this."
Renard says, "A heaten sorceror is surely up to evil!"
Corin says, "Strange. Euric's father was a good man I heard. What made Euric so bad?""
Bodoni says, "I do not care either way. My only wish is to deliver my son from the hands of devils. If they stand in my way, so be it."
GM says, "Modag gives Renard a strange look."
GM says, "Augax returns."
Corin says, "Augax! This is Modag. Modag, Augax...""
GM says, "they greet each other, both obviously impressed by what they've heard of the other."
GM says, "[Augax] Modag, i asked to meet you because i heard that you were a Greek seer. is that true?"
GM says, "[Modag] Greek, no. i am a Goth. but i do claim some knowledge of the stars and the future."
GM says, "[Augax] yes, Goth makes more sense. a barbarian, like me."
GM says, "[Modag] (smiling) indeed."
Corin says, "We need to help Joseph! He is the son of Bodoni, and is in big trouble!""
GM says, "[Augax] i may have use for your talents. would you be interested in taking a trip with me? the rewards will be tremendous."
GM says, "[Modag] (to corin) one moment, lad."
GM says, "Augax explains the basics of his plan to Modag, who gets a canny look in his eye."
GM says, "[Modag] i will come, but you must help me first. Bodoni's son Joseph is in mortal danger from Lord Euric."
GM says, "[Modag] if he is not rescued, i will not come with you."
Bodoni says, "Euric and his devils plan horrible fates for my son, I'm sure of it."
GM says, "[Augax] i am not sure that i need your help THAT much, Modag. Lord Euric is a powerful foe."
GM says, "Modag looks expectantly at the slaves."
Corin says, "Bodoni will never be the same man if you let his son die without effort""
Bodoni says, "If ye would do this, I will give you my freedom for my sons, Augax."
Bodoni desperate
Bodoni says, "I will remain your servant, if that's what it takes to free him."
Bodoni clearly having a difficult time of it
GM says, "[Augax] i can see how important this is to you."
GM says, "[Augax] but i won't NEED a servant after i have found my treasure."
Bodoni sags in desperation, clearly embarrased at having to beg this way "It is -all- I have to offer. What would you have me do?"
GM says, "[Augax] i would need some extremely compelling reason to risk my investment for this."
Corin says, "Augax, help us free Joseph, and I guarantee we will get that treasure for you.""
Bodoni defeated look "Sadly, I can offer you nothing else. For I have nothing else to give."
Caralchis (ooc: we'll all commit ritual suicide if you don't help us)
GM says, "[Augax] Euric's fun to needle, but he has far more resources than i do. it would be very bad for my business if i were to seriously anger him."
Bodoni says, "Is my life worth more than my servitude? I'll swear an oath to defend to you to death. I will die for you if need be."
GM says, "[Augax] your loyalty to your son is very great and commendable."
GM says, "[Augax] *sigh* very well. but i must not be involved."
Corin says, "Can you supply them with weapons, and men as well?""
Renard says, "You will have gained three additional men through this, Augax - if this treasure is going to be at all difficult to obtain, this may make all the difference"
GM says, "[Augax] we leave two mornings hence. i will give you the equipment i prepared for our trip. be ready to leave when i am, or it will not go well with you."
GM says, "[Augax] (to corin) men? no. equipment you may have."
GM says, "[Augax] (to corin) well, not YOU, corin. YOU must supply your own equipment. but my slaves here will be equipped."
Corin says, "Remember the men on the docks I told you about? Maybe they will help us? But they will want to be paid."
Corin says, "Modag, do yo uknow exactly where they are keeping Joseph?"
GM says, "[Augax] no, i am not investing money into this, and i don't want to be connected to it. if you want to hire men with your own money, go ahead. don't push me, boy."
Bodoni says, "We must make do with what we have, Corin. We have so little time, lad."
Corin says, "Understood, Augax.""
Corin says, "Modag will probably be able to get us all inside within the carruca.""
GM says, "[Modag] not *exactly*, but i can guess. Al-Khaz' reputation was made in visions, but i suspect him of necromancy. that is what frightens me, Corin."
GM says, "(ooc: yes that worked so well last time :)"
Corin says, "(lol)"
Corin says, "((were the walls scaleable?))"
Corin says, "Maybe we could climb over the walls in secrecy?""
GM says, "(ooc: reminds me of The Ghost and the Darkness, where Val Kilmer sets that trap. it doesn't work, but Kilmer claims that the theory is sound. so maybe he could try it again.)"
Bodoni listens closely to them all
Corin says, "Modag ,whats the best way in?"
Renard- [Guest] has arrived.
GM says, "Augax has leather armor, spears and knives for each of you."
Renard- [Guest] says, "..."
GM says, "no swords, though."
Renard- [Guest] [to GM]: will we get enough 'practice time' to spend some of those XP on spear, then?
GM says, "(ooc: nope!)"
GM says, "(ooc: that is, not before you leave for the Med.)"
Caralchis comments that he is much more skilled with a sword than with knives and spears
Renard- [Guest] [to GM]: that's what I meant - since we haven't spent them yet, and we ought to be able to use our weapons...
Corin says, "Lets hurry there. Whats our plan?"
GM says, "[Modag] (to corin) i don't know. i'm not a warrior."
Corin says, "I say we sneak over the walls at night.""
Corin says, "Bodoni? Any ideas?"
Bodoni says, "We'd need a means to scale it."
Bodoni says, "The wall, I mean."
Renard- [Guest] [to all]: is bodoni the only one helping?
Corin says, "Some quickly made ladders will work.""
Caralchis (ooc: what happens to slaves if they get convicted of a crime? is the master held responsible?)
Bodoni says, "Sneaking in by cart is not a good idea. Modag mentioned a large contingent of guards. They may be expecting something in any event."
GM says, "(ooc re XP: tough question. i mean, i'm giving you the freedom to spend discretionary XP 'in any way you like'. OTOH, the reason you have them left to spend is because you've procrastinated, and i don't want to reward that.)"
Corin says, "((heh, GM wanted a battle inside Euric's place, now he's getting it. *grin* ))"
Renard- [Guest] [to GM]: OTOH, giving them in a discrete block is unrealistic anyhow...
