GM says, "so at the end of last session, we had Bodoni and Corin finding Joseph chained to a wall"
Corin begins the task of unchaining Joseph by the light of the torch.
GM says, "they're in a sort of basement, down a long flight of stairs. Joseph's chains are solidly locked. i'll have to play Bodoni today, unfortunately."
GM says, "[Bodoni] i wish i had my tools. then this would be as easy a job as shoeing a docile mare."
GM [to Corin]: what relevant skills do you have for this?
Corin says, "(escape?)"
Corin says, "(lemme look)"
GM says, "escape works when you are chained, but not so much for someone else... now, if joseph has escape, that would be worth something."
Corin says, "(nothing really that I wouldnt default to)"
Corin says, "(does he?)"
Joseph says, "no"
Corin hands his knife to Bodoni, "maybe you'd better try, can you use this?"
Joseph says, "can we find something to pull the chains out of the wall?"
GM says, "(incidentally: Renard, Caralchis and Johan are back in the first room you got into. you're taking turns watching the hall for strangers. the door to the 'dungeon' is open.)"
Joseph has disconnected.
GM says, "[Bodoni] not a bad idea, son. i'm no locksmith, but if we can scrape this mortar away, we might be able to get these stones loose."
Renard - Johan is probably strongest if you need strength
Corin says, "i'd better not use this spyglass for scraping, i'll use my sword too.""
Joseph has connected.
Joseph says, "my browser crashed"
GM says, "Bodoni and Corin set to work on the mortar. it's crumbly but hard - your blades can scrape it loose, but not quickly."
Corin frantically scrapes at the mortar, "We must hurry!"
GM says, "corin works on one stone, while bodoni works on another... Joseph's chains are anchored in two separate, neighboring stones."
GM says, "both of you roll ST"
Corin rolls 3 + 0.

GM says, "bodoni?"
Corin says, "not here remember"
GM slap self on the forehead
Corin grins.
GM says, "ugh - not good."
Joseph says, "can I pull on the chains, or am I too weak?"
Corin says, "Think I should go get Johan? He looks like a strong ox that could help here?""
GM says, "you can pull, but you can't reach around to help scrape."
Joseph says, "ok. I try to pull too"
Corin stands and tries kicking at the stone to loosen it in place.
GM says, "one sec - whispering"
GM [to Joseph]: make a ST roll
Joseph rolls 3 + 0.

GM [to Joseph]: you pull with all your might, but there's no give in the stones yet and you can't make any progress
Corin continues to scrape at the mortar, urgently.
GM says, "still whispering, hehe."
Joseph says, "is there anything we could use as a chisel?"
Corin says, "(my knife and sword)"
GM says, "your weapons are probably the best things you have... a hammer of some sort might help, but there's nothing obvious around"
Joseph says, "any other ideas?"
Corin looks around for something to use as a hammer; a rock, or anything of weight.
Corin searches the whole room.
Caralchis says, "Am I getting waved under the bed, too?"
Corin says, "(uh-oh, what are we missing upstairs.)"
GM says, "ok, let's break the whispering. i'll just trust corin not to let it affect his actions. :)"
GM [to Renard]: you wave Johan under the bed, and he complies, squeezing his large frame into the tight space.
Corin says, "(good spot to keep a look out from)"
Renard - ok, done with the log. Looks like you guys specifically requested the door to the cellar left open, just so your noise and light can leak out...
Corin says, "(that was Bodoni's brainstorm)"
Renard are there torches on the wall in the hall?
GM [to Renard]: yes
GM [to Renard]: all flaming brightly
Corin says, "(do I find anything in the cellar?)"
Renard waves to Caralchis to jump out the window (if the sight is clear and the window big enough to be convenient)
Corin says, "(where the hell they going?)"
Caralchis looks through the window making sure there's no one about
GM [to Corin]: the cellar is completely bare.
GM [to Caralchis]: roll Vision
Corin returns to Joseph, continuing to scrape and pull at the the chain in the rock.
Caralchis rolls 3 + 0.

GM [to Caralchis]: you can't see too clearly, but you don't see anyone walking about outside.
Caralchis slips out the window and pressees up against the wall
Renard how are we all dressed these days?
GM says, "full leather armor."
GM [to Caralchis]: you get outside, hoping those slaves aren't bringing help too quickly.
Renard - could we pass for guards, or do they have a uniform?
Corin looks at Bodoni, "I hope we're not making too much noise here."
GM [to Renard]: some of the guards you've seen were wearing leather. some were wearing metal. you haven't seen any guards yet tonight, so you don't know what they're wearing for the party.
GM [to Renard]: roll Hearing
Caralchis does whatever he can to make himself not very visible
Renard rolls 3 + 0.
Result [6 3 6] = 15 + 0 = 15.
GM says, "Renard, Corin, Bodoni, and Joseph hear a man's voice from above: 'Hey, what's this door?'"
Corin frezes, then moves towards silently the bottom of the stairs, flanking it.
Renard walks out of the bedroom, into the hall, steels himself, approaches calmly (spear in a non-threatening hold), motions to speak to the folks, while taking a quick eyeball
GM says, "a woman's voice, slightly slurred, follows: 'i've never seen it open before, i don't know.'"
GM [to Renard]: when you open the door, you see the couple standing before the open door to the cellar. their backs are to you, and they don't hear you over the din of the party.
Corin calls up the stairs, loud enough for them to hear, "Hurry up checking the prisoner, we got a party upstairs to get back to. You know Euric's orders."
GM says, "[man] did you hear that, sweetie? a prisoner!"
GM says, "[woman] yes, i heard... oh! hello!"
Corin calls again, "But dont go to close to him, that disease is real bad he has!"
Renard , with etiquette, "Pardon me, lady, lord. Lord Euric wouldn't appreciate you poking around here. We're under strict orders...
GM says, "the woman has noticed Renard behind them. the two turn to look."
GM says, "the woman looks nervous"
GM says, "the man's eyes shift quickly, appraisingly over Renard. then he steps forward to speak candidly."
Corin hears Renard's voice and moves slowly and quietly up the stairs in the darkness.
GM says, "[man] what's your name, soldier? i don't recognize your face."
Corin tries to stay out of sight near the top.
GM [to Corin]: you crouch in the dark and see the backs of the couple through the open doorway.
Corin readies his sword.
Renard says, "I'm Harald, sir. I have to admit, I don't know you either, m'lord. I am one of a few extras hired for tonight..."
Renard rolls 3 + 0.

Corin says, "(oh man)"
Caralchis (what is up with these dice today???)
Corin says, "(james changed the macro after last week)"
GM says, "[man] Harald, eh? yes, i took you for a new recruit. are you from Britannia? that's an unusual name."
Renard says, "my mother may have been. My parents died when I was young. "
Corin waves down to Bodoni to continue working quietly on Joseph.
GM says, "[man] i see. well, no matter. i'm glad you don't know me (he gives you a meaningful look) either. i'd be most... appreciative... if you'd keep it that way, if you know what i mean (he glances at the women)"
GM says, "woman, singular"
Renard says, "oh (lowering voice), were you headed to the bedroom, sir?"
Renard steps to the side...
GM [to Renard]: note that there are lots of bedrooms, so the one you were in is far from unique
GM says, "[man] not as far as YOU know, soldier. right?"
Renard holds out his hand, for a bribe... I'm sure Euric wouldn't mind such a friend taking a breather from the party, to recover his head from the wine...
GM [to Renard]: are you *saying* that last part?
Renard [to GM]: I'm *dumb* enough to say it... :)
GM says, "[man] (chuckling) such audacity! very well, Harald, if that's what it takes."
GM says, "he reaches into the coin purse at his belt and hands you a few copper folles"
Renard nods, stands aside...
GM says, "the man leads the woman past you on down the hall and into a side room"
GM says, "it's not the room you were hiding in"
Corin steps out of the darkness and nods to Renard, then returns downstairs.
Renard listens at the door they entered.
Corin says, "Bodoni, we gotta hurry!" "
GM [to Renard]: you follow the couple to their room and listen at their door?
Corin continues scraping and pulling at the rock and chain.
Renard [to GM]: after they enter, assuming it
Corin says, "(looks through the keyhole)"
Renard [to GM]: ...assuming it's not terribly far away
GM [to Renard]: it's just past the one you were hiding in
GM [to Corin]: make another ST roll

Corin says, "(he's back!)"

GM says, "the stone on Corin's side is definitely loosening, but it's not free yet. Bodoni is having less luck on his side."
GM says, "[Bodoni] i should have eaten a bigger dinner. i'm getting hungry."
Corin works harder trying to break his free, getting motivated by its looseness. "never mind your belly, Bodoni, dig!"
GM [to Renard]: there is little talking in the room you are listening to, but you hear the faint rustle of clothing, the creaking of the bed frame, soft whispers
Renard [to GM]: good enough...
Corin says, "(open the door?)"
GM says, "you keep digging for another few minutes"
Renard goes to the bedroom, motions out the window for Caralchis. Gets Johan out from under the bed. Sends him to help yank Joseph out if they're not done yet...
Caralchis slips back into the window
Caralchis says to Renard quietly, "There's some people coming around the back wearing armour, we might want to keep away from the window"
GM says, "Johan heads out into the hall and down the stairs."
GM says, "corin and joseph, another ST roll each, please"
Corin rolls 3 + 0.

Renard [to Caralchis]: - hide in the corner of the room, keep an ear out. I'll be in the hall
Corin says, "(yes!)"
Caralchis hides in the corner and keeps an ear out
GM says, "all at once, the stone anchoring the chain that it around joseph's right arm comes loose."
Corin grunts at the weight of the stone, trying to lower it quietly.
GM says, "you can see that the anchor pin goes through the stone and ends in a broad plate that prevents it from sliding free."
GM says, "furthermore, Bodoni is making great progress getting the left arm free. it's definitely loosening."
Corin says, "(Is his right arm free then or not?)"
Renard pushes the door somewhat shut to muffle the sound...
GM says, "it's free, if by 'free' you mean that it's chained to a stone which is no longer set in the wall of the cellar."
GM says, "but at least he can move. :)"
Joseph says, "how heavy is the stone?"
Corin holds the loose stone and uses it as a hammer for the other stone chiseling.
GM says, "(let's see... say the stone is 30 cm square by 15 cm deep, and weighs 5 g/cc...)"
Corin says, "(where'd you get 5g/cc?)"
Corin says, "(Gurps book of prison stones *grin*)"
GM says, "(that'd be 27kg * 5 / 2 = about 70 kg... wow.)"
GM [to Corin]: water is 1g/cc, iron is 8g/cc, i interpolated :)
Corin says, "(2.2lbs per kg roughly?)"
GM says, "let's make each stone weigh about 60 lbs. each and i'll be generous and throw in the chains with that at NO EXTRA WEIGHT."
Corin says, "(you are very kind)"
Corin grins.
GM says, "luckily, also, Joseph isn't wearing much in the way of clothes... just a breechcloth... so the total puts him at Medium encumbrance. but he'll be clumsy, too, with the weight distributed that way."
Corin says, "(he can wrap the chains around his neck and dangle the rocks at his chest)"
GM says, "the chains are about six inches long"
Corin says, "(both stones free?)"
GM says, "yes, bodoni makes a heroic effort and smashes the second stone free"
Corin says, "(did Euric brand Jospeh, btw, or did he plan on just killing him?)"
Corin says, "lets go, you're free Joseph!""
GM [to Corin]: all slaves are branded when they are sold, it's a city requirement. so he was branded, too.
Corin helps joseph stand and move up the stairs.
GM says, "[Bodoni] thank God, son! now let's get out of here."
Joseph says, "Thanks, dad, corin it's good to see you."
GM says, "Caralchis comes into the hallway, sees Renard standing at the door and hears footsteps coming up the steps."
Joseph says, "tries to walk carrying the two stones"
Corin takes his knife back from Bodoni and holsters it.
Corin will be right back.
Caralchis says, "pssst.. Renard! The guards are coming round the corner towards our window; they seem to be searching pretty carefully"
GM [to Joseph]: you can walk, you're just clumsy and slow. you won't be able to do much with your hands, either.
Corin says, "b"
Joseph says, "how do we get out of here?"
Corin says, "(do I hear Caralchis?)"
Corin says, "Follow us.""
Renard says, "let's wait until the guards outside have passed our window..."
Renard says, "wait on the stairs for the moment..."
Corin nods. "How many guards?"
Caralchis says, "four"
Corin curses quietly under his breath.
GM [to Renard]: you can't see outside from the stairs... and the hallway here is pretty exposed.
Renard [to GM]: how many doors off the hallway?
Corin says, "lets move into a bedroom and close this damn door!""
GM [to Renard]: lots
Renard [to Corin]: and what if the guards look in the window?
Corin says, "they wont look in every bedroom! they'd be hung!""
Renard [to caralchis:]: is there a direction which they are done looking? are they scouting around the outer wall in a certain direction?
Corin says, "douse the lights at least in this hallway around here.""
Renard says, "right. douse the lights directly adjacent to the stairs."
Caralchis says, "I'm not sure"
Corin says, "well, i aint staying here on these prison steps.""
Corin pushes by Renard, and crouches down, moving slowly towards where caralchis is.
Renard [to Corin]: -- peek and see if they've passed our window...
GM says, "as you decide what to do, you see two men enter the hall all the way towards the front of the villa."
Corin says, "(time to run i think)"
GM says, "they're a good 35 yards away"
Corin says, "(did they see us?)"
Renard [to Corin]: assume they did
GM says, "as they come into full view, you recognize them as guards, wearing leather. they point, look to their left (around the corner from what you can see, and shout something."
Corin looks back at Joseph, "you are going to have to run, Joseph, and fast."
Joseph tries to run as fast as he can
Renard jumps into the bedroom, holding the door open
GM says, "ok, renard heads into the bedroom first"
Renard [to GM]: door open in or out of the room?
GM says, "into the room."
Corin sprints into the closest bedroom door.
Joseph follows Corin
Caralchis follows Renard
Corin heads right for the window.
GM [to Corin]: different room or the same one renard went into?
Corin says, "(closest one, you call it)"
GM [to Corin]: ok, same one then
Corin helps Joseph get thru the window as fast as he can.
GM says, "you head for the window and reach it first, climbing through"

GM says, "ok, joseph has some trouble. he gets the stones caught on the ledge, unbalances, and generally has trouble. renard pushes him on through, and he falls heavily on the ground, the chains clanking."
GM says, "renard then jumps through himself, but you've lost valuable time getting joseph through."
Corin pulls Jospeh to his feet and points at the trees. "Run! TOwards the trees!"
Caralchis comes through the window
GM [to Corin]: now outside, you see the gleam of armor in the trees
Corin says, "(in the trees we are heading for?)"
GM says, "let's count seconds here... 2 for corin, 5 for joseph, 2 more for renard... that's 9, and bodoni, johan and caralchis are still in the bedroom (with bodoni next in line)"
Corin says, "run for the wall Joseph, the closest is that way!" Corin points north."
GM [to Corin]: actually, in those trees directly north of the back wall... maybe 20 yards away from you
Corin says, "(scratch last sentence then)"
GM says, "the door to the bedroom bursts open and guards start piling in."
Corin says, "(Corin points east)"
GM says, "leading the way are two in leather, brandishing swords"
GM says, "switching to second-by-second action here"
GM says, "i'll brb, so think about your first second now :)"
The housekeeper arrives to cart Renard off to bed.
Caralchis (should we just run.. or try and fight?)
Renard has arrived.
Caralchis (or maybe push the wardrobe on them...)
Corin says, "(we have to get everyone able to run)"

GM [to Renard]: we're switching to combat mode here.
GM [to Renard]: you, joseph and corin are outside, with the armored guards 20 yards away. the rest are in the bedroom, and you can hear commotion in there.
Renard [to GM]: how many guards?
Corin says, "(everyone dive out the window as fast as you can)"
GM says, "ok, first second and we'll start in the bedroom. caralchis, the bedroom is 5 yards by 5 yards. bodoni is climbing through the window, so you and johan are there"
Corin says, "(push his fat ass out)"
GM says, "there are two guards, but you can see more behind them. the first two have just come through the door and are approaching."
GM [to Caralchis]: so whaddya do?
Caralchis does it look like I could push that wardrobe on them?
GM says, "doubtful - it's not in a good place for that."
GM says, "and it'd take a couple of seconds to tip it over, during which time you'd probably be impaled."
Joseph says, "(ooc)I'm looking at James' map of Euric's villa, could someone tell me where we are?"
GM [to Joseph]: just outside the 'g' in "Main Building"
GM [to Joseph]: just to the north of that building wall. the guards are in the trees to your northwest, and corin is pointing into the trees to your northeast.
Caralchis damn.. I'll get out my spear and do an all out defense towards the window...
Renard [to all]: we're pretty damned fucked
GM says, "Johan unlimbers his spear as well."
Corin says, "(if you get out the window we might make it)"
Corin says, "(once its free run and dive thru it)"
Caralchis says, "(that's my plan)"
GM says, "the guards move forward, coming to within 2 hexes on this turn. your backs are to the window. the next turn you'll be able to attack/defend"
GM says, "(note that drawing your spear occupies a round, so you couldn't have defended the first round anyway.)"
GM says, "ok, corin, your move"
Corin removes his bow and grabs bodoni, pulling him hard thru the window.
Corin says, "Joseph, run! now!""
Joseph says, "(ooc) so we are between the armor in the trees and the gate that doesn't have a guardhouse next to it? Also, kindly remind me how high the walls are around E.'s villa."
GM [to Joseph]: right, and about six feet.
Renard [to all]: what good does it do us even to escape the villa? we'll still be chased...
GM [to Corin]: roll your ST
Corin attempts to knock an arrow if time permits this round.

Renard charges the two guards with his spear to try and intimidate them into slowing down... (I have a move to make when we are within striking range)
GM [to Renard]: you're outside the building, unfortunately.
Corin says, "(help Joseph run)"
Renard [to GM]: I thought there were 2 guards outside
Corin says, "(those other guards havent moved towards us yet)"
GM says, "there are four guards, about 20 yards away, wearing metal armor. they've seen you, but aren't charging."
Renard [to GM]: oh, I assumed they were charging (and didn't notice they were in metal) Joseph doesn't need my help (he's only at medium, right), though if he trips I will
Renard goes in the window in the room next door...
Corin says, "(?)"
GM says, "(interesting! a flank attack!) ok, are you hurrying?"
Corin says, "(oh god help us all)"
Renard doesn't dick around.
Corin says, "(i dont think he's strolling)"
GM [to Renard]: roll your DX

GM says, "ok, you jump through, surprising the shit out of the couple in the bed there. next round!"

Joseph says, "how much light is there outside?"
GM [to Joseph]: the moon is only a sliver, and back here there's not much firelight. the armored guards are carrying torches.
GM says, "the light is fairly poor, on the whole. lots of shadows. of course, it's better in the open than among the trees."
Joseph says to corin, 'I'm going to need help getting over the wall' and runs to the clump of trees between the villa and the servant's quarters
Renard [Guest] has arrived.
Renard_ [Guest] [to GM]: got disconnected --
GM [to Joseph]: to get down there you'd have to cross a lighted path between the two buildings, where servants periodically carry stuff back and forth
Joseph changes his mind and heads for the clump of trees in the north east corner
GM says, "ok, you'll move 3 yards in the first second, and 4/turn thereafter"
Corin says, "(Bodoni?)"
GM says, "so it'll take you about 8 seconds to reach the treeline"
GM says, "next round!"
GM says, "the armored guards in the trees begin to move forward. they have drawn swords and shields. there are two slaves with them, hanging back, carrying their torches."
GM says, "bodoni has come through the window, so it's now free. but that was Bodoni's move this turn. corin, you start us off."
Corin removes his bow and nocks an arrow, aiming it at the approaching guards.
Corin says, "Bodoni, help Joseph, I'll cover you!""
GM [to Corin]: roll fast-draw (arrow)

Corin says, "(lets hope that keeps up)"

GM says, "they didn't notice you, amazingly."
Corin says, "(bury a spear in their back!)"
GM says, "they are 4 yards away. next turn you can move farther."

Caralchis all out defends and keeps the window clear for Johan
GM says, "the guards step and attack, one swinging at each of you. you notice another pair of guards just coming in from the hallway"
GM says, "[Johan] you go first! i'll hold them off!"
Caralchis says, "fine then"
Caralchis moves towards the window
GM [to Caralchis]: tell me your defense and then roll for it - the guard swinging at you hit you
GM [to Caralchis]: you can retreat once, then your back will be against the window ledge
Caralchis (you use the rule where you can take +2 to a defense with AOD?)
GM [to Caralchis]: yep
Caralchis (what does retreating do again?)
The housekeeper arrives to cart Renard off to bed.
GM [to Caralchis]: gives you +3 to defense
Caralchis says, "ok, i'll do that then, my parry with spear is 6, then plus 3 would be 9 I think)"
Caralchis rolls 3 + 0.

Caralchis says, "fook"
GM [to Caralchis]: actually, it's not so bad. we base defense off of a 3, plus 6 for the Parry, plus 2 for the AOD, +1 for the retreat, gives you a 12.
GM [to Caralchis]: (i was just reminded that retreats give +1 to parry/block, and +3 to dodge) but in any case, you made it, barely.
Caralchis says, "oooh! forgot about that""
GM says, "incidentally, the other guard swung wickedly at johan's head, and johan intercepted his blade deftly, twisting slightly in such a way that the guard's sword goes clattering to the floor."
GM [to Joseph]: still running? (you have 7 second to go to reach the trees)
Joseph runs for it and hopes his friends catch up in time.
GM says, "next round!"
Renard_ [Guest] all-out-attacks (+4 tohit, based on default) the guard with his spear.
GM says, "the armored guards continue to advance in formation at a slow jog directly towards Corin and Bodoni"
GM says, "corin, you first"
Corin says, "(how many rounds until they reach me?)"

Corin says, "(whats going on in the window? can i see a guard to shoot at?)"
GM [to Corin]: if you turn to look, you can't aim at an armored guard this turn. your choice.
Corin braces his back to the wall of the house, and takes careful aim at the closest approaching guard.
GM says, "ok."
GM [to Renard_ [Guest]]: you all-out-attack at +4... roll your hit

Corin curses as he fumbles with his bow.
GM says, "so, moving on to caralchis. Johan yells at your again to get out the window, and pokes at the guard attacking you."
Corin yells in the window, "lets go!"
GM says, "who, by the way, is closing to grapple range to attack with his knife."
GM says, "you can stop-thrust to prevent this - if he gets inside your spear, you won't be able to use it at all."
Caralchis tries to go through the window
Corin says, "(run and dive!)"
GM says, "you'll have to turn your back to your attacker to do this."
